Waivers or Test-Outs

A student may seek a test out/waiver for any general engineering course for which they believe they have mastered the subject matter. The purpose is to offer the exceptional student/experienced engineer an opportunity to begin course work at an appropriate level. This procedure is not intended to encourage the typical student to test out of fundamental courses.  Students may also wish to take a course instead of testing out in order to meet grade point average requirements for acceptance into their major.

Test-outs consist of a final exam for the course and appropriate lab test, where necessary.  To start the process, talk with an instructor for the course(s) of which you wish to test out. Keep the following guidelines in mind:

  • A minimum passing grade of 70% is required of any test-out
  • Students may attempt a test-out of a course only once
  • After the first week of class, a student cannot attempt to test-out of a currently enrolled course
  • Students who have failed a course or received an unsatisfactory passing grade in a course may not subsequently test-out of that course

Waivers are provided on a case-by-case basis.  If you feel you qualify for one, start this process by working with a UWP faculty advisor and complete a Degree Program Change form.

Grades

UW-Platteville determines the grade point average (GPA) by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total number of credits attempted.  This cumulative GPA does not include credits and grade points earned at other colleges or universities (such as UW-Rock).  When repeating courses, only the most recent grade counts in figuring the GPA.

At the end of each semester, grade reports are available on PeopleSoft through the “Self Service” selection.  At the midpoint of each semester, students with D or F grades in a course receive a low-grade report so they can discuss a plan for improvement with the faculty member involved.

Grading mistakes should be rectified before the end of the ninth week of the ensuing semester. It is the student’s responsibility to call the instructor’s attention to any error in grading as soon as possible after grades are reported. It is the instructor’s responsibility to correct grading errors.

Sometimes it is appropriate, because of student illness or other unusual circumstances, to give a grade of Incomplete (I). After a student receives an Incomplete, it is the student’s responsibility to complete all work and assignments necessary to complete the class requirements prior to the ninth week of the ensuing semester. Unless an Incomplete is changed to some other grade before the end of the ninth week of the ensuing semester, the Incomplete is changed to an F grade.
